Peer counseling/education training is built on the premise that people learn better from their peers and often seek assistance from them in times of personal crisis. The training aims at providing participants with an opportunity to gain a new understanding of themselves and assist fellow peers. It is expected that participants will be role models in individual growth and take more of a leadership role in the various institutions.
In a school/ work setting for example, if a variety of students/ employees are trained in effective listening skills, mediation skills, and are sensitive to issues in a setting then they would be able to effectively assist their peers with a range of issues. Peer counselors are not encouraged to give solutions or advice, they are expected to empathize with their peers, listen without making judgments and make appropriate referrals within the institutional/ organizational setup.
This program involves the teaching and communication of self-awareness stress and anger management, basic counselling and communication skills, values and interpersonal relationship between individuals who are of equal social status or share similar characteristics or have common experiences. Peer counseling is very important because it is directed toward enabling the individual to meet personal needs to more fully functional and take control of his life, in his home, community and employment.
